How Is The Heat Pump Doing Now it’s getting cold ASHP

As the winter chill settles in, it's time to check in on how your air source heat pump (ASHP) is faring during these colder months. Having installed and serviced a fair share of these systems, I’ve seen firsthand how they perform when the temperatures drop. Spoiler alert: with the right maintenance and care, they can hold up pretty well! For those unfamiliar, an ASHP extracts heat from the outside air, even when it's nippy outside, and pumps it into your home. However, performance can take a hit on the coldest days, which can raise questions for homeowners and fellow plumbers alike. Are they really worth it for winter heating? First off, regular maintenance is key. Just like any piece of equipment, your heat pump needs a little TLC to operate efficiently. Cleaning or replacing filters and ensuring the outdoor unit is free of snow and ice will keep it functioning optimally. Remember to periodically check the refrigerant levels as well; low levels can severely impact performance. Another thing to keep in mind is the auxiliary heat. In especially frigid conditions, many ASHPs kick in electric resistance heating to make up for any shortfall, which can lead to higher energy bills. Educating homeowners about this feature can help them understand the system better and anticipate their energy usage. If you’re a DIYer or a homeowner tackling this issue, consider monitoring the thermostat settings and indoor temperature. Sometimes, a simple adjustment can enhance comfort without breaking the bank. And for my fellow plumbers, don't forget the importance of explaining these features to clients, so they know what to expect during the colder months. So, as we face the chilly days ahead, remember that a well-maintained ASHP can provide both comfort and efficiency. Keep an eye on those units, and you’ll see them through the winter just fine! Stay warm out there, everyone!
